Mazda has been busy releasing highly capable and versatile SUVs. The Japanese automaker recently released the all-new Mazda CX-50, as well as the Mazda CX-60. Not stopping there, Mazda has already begun teasing its newest SUVs, the CX-70 and CX-90. With so many high-performance SUVs, it’s tough to get a gauge of how any one SUV performs in particular given that Mazda continues to update its lineup with new engines and new powertrains. Thankfully, we’ll be taking a look at Mazda’s all-new CX-50 and seeing how well it performs with its rugged styling and turbocharged engine.

Behind the Wheel of the Mazda CX-50

The all-new Mazda CX-50 comes equipped with either a 2.5L inline-four or a turbocharged 2.5L engine. The inline-four is capable of 187 horsepower and 186lb-ft of torque while the turbocharged engine produces 227 horsepower and 310lb-ft of torque. Both engines pair with a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system. The CX-50 features a sport mode as well as an off-road mode. This helps drivers take advantage of the crossover SUV’s performance and capability. Owners using the turbocharged 2.5L will also have the ability to take advantage of 3,500 pounds of towing capacity.

Driving the 2023 CX-50 feels dynamic and engaging. The crossover SUV is wider and longer than the CX-5 which helps give it more stability when driving. The CX-50 also has 8.6-inches of ground clearance which pairs well with the off-road mode to grant drivers the ability to tackle dirt roads and trails. Using the turbocharged engine enables more acceleration, but those opting for the 2.5L inline-four will still have great throttle and transmission response.

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 starts at an MSRP of $26,800 (plus destination fee). Owners of the compact crossover SUV will note a stylish and luxurious interior. This is thanks to Mazda’s unique KODO design system. A 10.25-inch display serves as the infotainment system and it comes compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For safety, the 2023 CX-50 features forward-collision warnings, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot and rear-cross traffic warnings. There are also lane departure warnings, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is an engaging crossover SUV that’s highly capable and versatile. As is tradition with Mazda vehicles, it’s also fun to drive.
