From ‘Zoom Zoom’ to Premium Luxury SUVs: a Breakdown of Mazda’s Evolution
Accompanied by a catchy reggae-style theme song, Mazda’s “Zoom Zoom” slogan and advertising campaign dominated the automotive landscape throughout the 2000s and 2010s, offering a wealth of sporty vehicles amidst a sea of less-sporty options.
The latest Mazda children retain the family’s sporty flair while incorporating a significant dose of premium luxury. The company’s new SUV designs exude an upscale ambiance, complete with cutting-edge technology.
The 2024 Mazda CX-90, a three-row SUV, debuted last year (2024) as an entirely new model, leading the charge in this upscale direction. Notably, it offers the choice of plug-in hybrid power centered around a seamless transition into the electric market. Mazda’s latest addition to its lineup is the upcoming 2025 CX-70, starting at $40,445* (excludes taxes and destination fees).
Replacing the old CX-9, the larger CX-90, and the CX-70 for the two-row segment brings a more premium feel. The Mazda CX-70, like its larger counterpart, is available as a plug-in hybrid or with an inline six-cylinder engine, a design choice reminiscent of Mercedes-Benz and BMW’s better days, albeit enhanced with turbocharging and a mild hybrid system for optimal power and efficiency.
Positioned as a lifestyle vehicle for those who do not require three rows of seats, the CX-70 offers numerous accessories and a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds. Mazda plans to roll out this model to dealerships in the coming spring (2024).
Mazda’s nomenclature for its SUV models corresponds to model numbers with overall size. The price range gauges from the larger, more luxurious CX-90 to the relatively new and more compact CX-30, priced at $24,995* (excludes taxes and destination fees), which offers a sportier driving experience.
Though “Zoom Zoom” may no longer be the official slogan, the spirit of it lives on, particularly evident in the CX-30. Compact and agile, the CX-30 offers optional turbo engine variants for an exhilarating driving experience.
While the iconic MX-5 Miata continues to embody the brand’s spirit of “Zoom Zoom,” Mazda has set its sights on growing with its fans into a more sophisticated demographic, emphasizing technology, safety, and premium interiors. With its diverse lineup of crossover SUVs, Mazda caters to those seeking something beyond the mainstream.
