Banksy’s Artistic Transcendence: The Enigmatic Door from a 1990s Mazda Protege
Once upon a time, the black and white door presented in the images was a component of a late 1990s Mazda Protege. Examining the visuals at Julien’s Auctions, where this door is slated for sale, reveals a Mazda sticker on the interior window and the original tan interior panel. The external transformation occurred courtesy of street artist Banksy, who adorned it with a depiction of a person gazing skyward and other elements.
Presently, the door’s potential value surpasses that of the entire car from which it originated. The auction house provides an estimate ranging from $100,000 to $200,000, with the final price set to be unveiled on February 15 when the bidding concludes. This auction is part of Julien’s street art event in Beverly Hills, with ongoing online bidding. The current status of bids remains uncertain, but the starting point for participation is $25,000. Notably, this figure significantly exceeds the Protege’s original sticker price. The door represents only a segment of Banksy’s original creation known as “Crazy Horse.” The complete Mazda and a section of a box truck were adorned to depict an eerie war scene. The car showcased individuals looking up at the truck, featuring horses equipped with night vision goggles closing in on them. The scene included a phone number, dialing which played audio clips of a 2007 airstrike in Iraq. This work drew inspiration from an Apache helicopter with the code name Crazy Horse 18. While information about the remaining pieces is scarce, a Banksy-centric blog asserts that the car and truck were removed shortly after their installation in October 2013. Allegedly, both the truck and car, lacking driver-side doors, were loaded onto a truck and transported away.
