An Electric Mazda Miata is on the Horizon
There were some rumblings about an all-electric Mazda Miata, and we have to admit, as a fan of the classic roadster, we’re a bit skeptical. But it seems like Mazda is fully committed to electrification, and they’ve just announced a new three-phase strategy that includes plans for an MX-5 EV. It’s still unclear when we can expect to see this electric Miata on the road, but Mazda has also released a teaser for the “Vision Study Model,” a gorgeous coupe concept that hints at the future design of the iconic sports car.Â
Mazda has confirmed that the next-generation Miata will be electrified in some way, and we can expect to see a hybrid setup that aligns with the company’s second phase. However, there’s a possibility of a fully electric Miata by the end of the decade. The “Vision Study Model” concept that Mazda has recently teased gives us an idea of what the iconic sports car could look like in the future. The concept appears in press images and video clips on Mazda’s official YouTube channel, starting at the 34:55 mark. It’s exciting to see how Mazda’s three-phase strategy for electrification will unfold, and what it means for the future of the Miata.
As we eagerly waited for the concept’s debut, we were treated to a montage of people driving various generations of the Miata, which only added to our anticipation and curiosity about the potential connection between these past models and the upcoming Vision Study Model. Finally, we caught a glimpse of the concept through the screen of an iPhone, revealing its exposed chassis and a T-shaped battery pack. As the car’s body descended onto the chassis, we were able to see the passenger’s side butterfly door open up, giving us a tantalizing peek at what could be the future of the iconic sports car.
It’s great that the Miata concept is keeping the convertible body style that has made it so iconic. While the butterfly doors are certainly a unique feature, I can see why they might not make it to production. It’s interesting to hear that Mazda has offered a fixed-roof variant in the past, and it will be exciting to see what they come up with for the future of this beloved sports car.
The Miata concept is really impressive. The design looks like it could be a real head-turner on the road. The wide hips, peaked front fenders, and low cowl are all striking features that add to its overall appeal. We love the illuminated Mazda logo on the front, it’s a really cool touch. The front lighting elements look sleek and modern too.Â
While we can’t say for sure if the Miata concept will lead to an EV version, it’s still exciting to see the potential possibilities. Mazda has a history of creating visually stunning concept cars that don’t always make it to production, but they do tend to influence the brand’s overall design direction. So, who knows what the future may hold? It’s always fun to dream and imagine what could be possible.
