The name Mazda is derived from Ahura Mazda, the Zoroastrian god of the sky. Ahura Mazda is a significant figure in Zoroastrianism, considered as the god of creation and frequently referred to during the Yasna ceremony, which is the main act of worship in the religion. Interestingly, Mazda sounds quite similar to the surname of one of the company’s early key figures, Jujiro Matsuda.

While it is not uncommon for things in the automotive industry to be named after spiritual or holy concepts, it is fascinating that the name of one of Japan’s most successful car manufacturers comes from the highest deity in a religion that originated from the Middle East. This makes it an even more intriguing piece of knowledge.

Mazda Wasn’t Always a Car Manufacturer

The company was established in Hiroshima, where the area surrounding it had plenty of cork trees.
