Will Mazda Eventually Offer An All-Electric Sedan?
A new patent application from Mazda indicates that there may be an all-new, all-electric sedan. Like many other automakers, Mazda has taken an interest in EVs, having released its first all-electric vehicle, the Mazda MX-30, a year ago. Since then, the Japanese automaker has been working on increasing the available battery range offered by the MX-30. To accomplish this, Mazda turned to a rotary engine design to create a hybrid setup. In experimenting with the hybrid setup, the automaker looked to move toward plug-in hybrid vehicles, one of which was the Mazda CX-60. Equipped with a hybrid powertrain, the CX-60 demonstrates the potential of combining an engine with an electric motor. Although Mazda has been quiet about its EV work, a recent patent has many speculating that the automaker may be planning an all-electric sedan. We’ll take a closer look at the patent and see what consumers can expect.
Is Mazda Working on An Electric Sedan?
Mazda recently disclosed a new patent application highlighting the body structure of a new compact electric sedan. While not entirely confirmed, the recent discovery has many speculating that the Mazda’s next EV will be an electric sedan. Looking at the patent, it’s clear that emphasis is placed on the vehicle’s body structure. There are also details related to motor placement and battery size. One detail addresses the battery stating that it is a typical lithium-ion battery pack. Its size is also said to be relatively thin but large enough to provide adequate battery range. If Mazda has succeeded in developing a more substantial battery, the potential for its hybrids and EVs like the MX-30 will be worth paying attention to.
Lately, Mazda has been focused on improving its hybrid technology. The Japanese automaker has teased two new vehicles, the CX-60 and CX-90. Both will be SUVs, and both are expected to offer hybrid setups. For the near future, Mazda will be focused solely on hybrid technology. The automaker’s first electric vehicle left something to be desired with its limited 100 miles of battery range. Mazda is now using its experience with the MX-30 to create a powerful hybrid vehicle that utilizes both a gasoline engine and an electric motor.
Digging deeper into the patent details, we find information about the vehicle’s drive system. A single motor appears at the front of the sedan. Notes indicate that the engine could either be placed at the car’s rear or on both axles. Mazda’s new electric sedan could see either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. That is, of course, if the automaker decides to go through with it. Judging by the overall design of the vehicle, it resembles the Mazda 3. The compact sedan could be used as a placeholder, however. Either way, we’re excited to see what Mazda has in store.
