Mazda’s CX-5 was one of the best-selling SUVs in 2022. With over 300,000 units sold, the Japanese automaker was able to provide consumers with one of its most capable and versatile vehicles. Despite having impressive sales, Mazda has not stopped with the CX-5. Some of the latest vehicles to be released by Mazda include the CX-50 and CX-60. The automaker has also been busy working on new models like the CX-70 and CX-90, which are set to be hybrids. Hybrid technology has been an essential factor for Mazda as it inches into a higher luxury class. With so much at the forefront, many wonder where the CX-5 will go. We’ll take a look at the crossover SUV and see what consumers can expect.

Is The Mazda CX-5 On Its Last Legs?

The Mazda CX-5 was one of Mazda’s best-selling SUVs last year. The crossover SUV offers impressive capability and versatility, all tied up in a signature Mazda aesthetic. Mazda sold 365,000 units of the CX-5 which was impressive compared to its second-best seller, the Mazda 3, which sold 173,000 units. With the CX-5, owners can choose between a 2.5L four-cylinder engine or a turbocharged 2.5L. With the 2.5L, they will see 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. Those wanting more power will enjoy the turbocharged 2.5L’s 256 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and utilize all-wheel drive.

Performance-wise, the Mazda CX-5 offers impressive responsiveness and agility. This is thanks to several upgrades to the suspension and chassis. The crossover SUV is also exceptionally quick, thanks to an electrically assisted steering wheel. For fuel economy, the base 2.5L engine sees 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Equipped with the turbocharged 2.5L, the CX-5 sees 22 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

While the CX-5 offers impressive performance, its interior is one of the distinct qualities of the crossover. The compact crossover SUV arrives with a unique style complemented by leather seats and high-quality materials like wood grain accents throughout the cabin. For entertainment, the 2023 CX-5 gets a 10.3-inch infotainment screen. For safety, the Mazda CX-5 offers forward-collision warnings, automatic emergency braking, and blind spot monitoring. Although the Mazda CX-5 offers so much at just an MSRP of $26,700 (plus destination fee), it’s uncertain if Mazda will keep the crossover SUV around. The automaker has stated it wants to move into a higher luxury class, and several new SUVs are on the way. As one of Mazda’s most popular SUVs, however, it’s likely Mazda will keep the CX-5 around for a bit longer.
