The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata continues to be an iconic sports car. Mazda has improved the compact convertible to offer drivers greater performance and better control. These changes affected both the Miata’s transmission, as well as its brake system. Mazda calls its software technology Kinematic Posture Control, helping it narrow the model’s precision and control. Mazda has been working on new ways to improve its lineup. The Japanese automaker recently released the new Mazda CX-60, which is its most powerful SUV yet. The crossover SUV utilizes a plug-in hybrid system (PHEV) which Mazda has teased for quite some time. We’re not sure if Mazda will eventually equip the popular Miata with this new PHEV technology, but we’ll take a look at the current 2022 MX-5 and speculate as to where Mazda could take it in the future.

Will the Miata Feature a PHEV System?

Mazda recently unveiled their most powerful SUV yet, the all-new 2023 CX-60. With a total output of 322 horsepower and 369lb-ft of torque, the CX-60 has proven that a plug-in hybrid system is powerful and versatile. This plug-in hybrid system (PHEV) is Mazda’s latest technology and it is revolutionary. The Japanese automaker plans to utilize this PHEV system for its all-electric MX-30 to extend its range. A good question however is whether it’s possible for Mazda to implement this technology into a future Miata?

The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata currently features a 2.0L inline-four cylinder engine that’s capable of 181 horsepower. Mazda recently improved the Miata’s body roll by enhancing its steering, suspension geometry, and anti-roll bars. Mazda also used its unique Kinematic Posture Control (KCP) software to improve the Miata’s brake system. This has allowed the Miata to corner with even better control and precision. If Mazda were to equip the Miata with its new PHEV system, the performance capabilities would be endless. Mazda’s European head of product development Joachim Kunz recently spoke about the Miata and Mazda’s vision for it. Kunz said,

“It’s our brand icon, and it is always treated very specially. At the moment, it looks like we will have this car forever, with this size and concept and combustion engine. Of course, someday, we will have to electrify it, but we want to keep this pure concept.”

If Mazda can electrify the MX-5 Miata or equip it with a PHEV system, the sports car would be an impressive sight. Fans would beam over the new performance abilities and capabilities. Although Mazda has stated that it wants to keep the Miata pure, given the current wave of EVs, it’s likely we will see some variation of a PHEV Miata in the near future. We’ll be looking forward to whatever Mazda has in store for its iconic Miata.
