What Will Follow in the Mazda CX-90’s Tread Marks?

The reveal of the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is right around the corner for the US, and enthusiasts can’t wait to experience the new longitudinal-engine platform. The Japanese automaker’s new platform will allow fans the opportunity to be acquainted with the car maker’s fresh premium feel. The seven-seater employs a 3.3-liter inline-six engine. However, once the CX-90 makes its grand debut, then out comes the Mazda CX-70. The future midsize SUV will mimic its bigger brother, the CX-90, which leaves us enough room to understand the CX-70’s fate. 

Although the CX-90 will look to reimagine the last of the beloved Mazda CX-9, the CX-70 will reserve a space in the Japanese automaker’s lineup that has never been filled. Once upon a time, there was a CX-7, but that last model erected was the 2012 model year. So above the compact Mazda CX-50, the CX-70 will share a similar platform and powertrain to the CX-90. The CX-70 is a two-row midsize SUV that will contend with the likes of the Honda Passport and Jeep Grand Cherokee, but unlike these commoners, the Mazda SUV will present a luxurious approach that only the Lexus RX could dream about. 

The future midsize Mazda should imitate the styling of the CX-60, the European markets variation of the CX-70. Regardless, the Mazda SUV will mimic the CX-90 with its ingeniously crafted sculpted front end and enough chrome to make any 2000s rapper proud. Further, the Mazda CX-70 will reveal a more comprehensive body than its European fraternal twin, as will the CX-90, which somewhat mirrors the CX-80 (another exclusive to the European market).   

The CX-70 may deliver the same powertrain as the CX-90. As a result, the standard engine may be the turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six which forges 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. However, keep in mind that the engine’s output requires premium fuel, so the Japanese automaker hasn’t disclosed the output figures of regular octane. Additionally, the turbocharged engine receives assistance from the 48-volt hybrid system with an electric motor snuggled between the engine and transmission. Moreover, we anticipate that the CX-70 will employ an all-wheel drive powertrain.
