Interior 

When it comes to interior quality, both the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 are impressive, but the Mazda edges out the competition with better materials and a more attractive design. However, the CR-V’s standard unit still falls short of the CX-5’s. Honda does offer a larger 9-inch screen with wireless smartphone capability in higher trims, but it’s still not as impressive as the CX-5’s standard unit.  

Performance 

While the Honda CR-V’s turbo-four engine is more powerful than the Mazda CX-5’s base engine, the CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience and is available with a more potent turbo engine. The CX-5 comes with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the Honda has a continuously variable transmission. The standard CX-5 engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, but the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine makes 256 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on premium fuel.

On the other hand, the Honda CR-V is only available with a single engine choice, a modest turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque.

Handling 

Mazda has a reputation for making SUVs that are more engaging to drive than their rivals, and the CX-5 is no exception. It offers sharp turn-in, controlled handling, and decent ride quality in most situations. The standard all-wheel drive helps the SUV confidently tackle curvy roads, and the steering feel is great. On the other hand, the Honda CR-V isn’t as fun to drive, but it still maintains a comfortable ride with handling that is notably improved over the previous generation. The steering is direct and confident, and the brake pedal feels firm.
