The Mazda that Will Live on Forever

It’s been thirty-three years since the grand debut of the Mazda Miata at the Chicago Auto Show, and fans are still in awe of the fabulous roadster. Since then, the little sports car has attained several refinements, including a few British efforts and the Japanese automaker’s resiliency. However, many Miata enthusiasts fear what the future holds for the sports car during this electric transition. However, the Miata’s horizon never looked so bright.

Like the vehicles that sport the Mazda logo, its engineers work vigorously to transition into an electric drive lineup. However, most of the Japanese automaker’s lineup clings to a large rear-wheel-drive or the smaller vehicles rely on the front-wheel-drive platform. Additionally, the all-electric and hybrid variations rev to life with a new Mazda logo nestled at the nose.

The Miata, however, is of its own caliber. The sports car offers a rear-wheel drive and just enough room for two. In other words, the Mazda Miata is the only vehicle in the lineup to hold a one-of-a-kind platform. Additionally, the sports car is a rare commodity, being one of very few to offer a manual gearbox.

“It’s our brand icon and it is always treated very specially. At the moment, it looks like we will have this car forever, with this size and concept and combustion engine. Of course, some day, we will have to electrify it, but we want to keep this pure concept.”

– Mazda Head of Product Development and Engineering for Europe., Joachim Kunz

There’s a deep sigh of relief for many Miata enthusiasts to know that Mazda wants to maintain the integrity of the iconic sports car. Other iconic contenders like the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Ford Mustang have rebranded their names and, honestly, their integrity, and it’s refreshing to find an automaker that doesn’t.

Since the Mazda roadster bears a unique platform, manufacturing comes at a costly price for the automaker. So, unfortunately, it wouldn’t be possible for Mazda to maintain the Miata’s jubilant character if the vehicle shifted to front-wheel-drive to cut costs. However, ask any Miata fanatic, and they will affirm that the Roadster maintains a longer life expectancy than most vehicles.

“Having one generation for 10 years is not a problem for us.” -Kunz

Looking toward the future, the Miata will likely come to life through Mazda’s advanced gasoline engine technology, such as Skyactiv-X. Additionally, the Skyactiv-X will help the Japanese automaker meet strict emissions regulations in the future. There will come a time when the Miata will have to change, but at this time, the Roadster is one heck of a thrill
