Mazda had initially planned to introduce the CX-70 by the end of this year, but a change of strategy has led to the decision to launch the new SUV sometime next year. In October, indications from the company suggested that the engine lineup for the CX-70 might mirror that of the CX-90, and recent findings from filings with the California Air Resources Board (CARB), as uncovered by recent car experts, provide stronger evidence supporting this possibility.

According to the CARB documents, the CX-70 is set to feature the same powertrains as its larger counterpart, the CX-90. This decision aligns with the fact that both SUVs will share the same platform. The primary distinction between the two lies in the seating arrangement—the CX-90 accommodates seven passengers, whereas the CX-70 will adopt a two-row layout. The CX-90 boasts a 3.3-liter electrified inline-six engine that produces 340 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Additionally, a 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid engine with 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque is available. Both engines come standard with all-wheel drive, a feature that, according to the CARB documents, is likely to extend to the CX-70 as well.

As of now, Mazda has not officially disclosed the launch date for the CX-70 in the United States. Nevertheless, the model is anticipated to play a crucial role in the brand’s lineup as Mazda endeavors to deliver approximately 500,000 vehicles in the country by the mid-2020s. The set target for 2023 is the sale of 350,000 cars in the US, showcasing Mazda’s strategic approach to solidifying its presence in the competitive automotive market.
