The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is the Best Compact SUV
In 2017, Mazda took the world by storm with the debut of the second-generation CX-5. Since the debut of the 2017 Mazda CX-5, the SUV has attained its fair share of upgrades. A few of the CX-5’s enhancements were refinements for the better, such as a larger infotainment display and the optional turbocharged engine. Other underappreciated alterations include a new font for the badges, an appearance package, and a mild modification to the exterior design for the 2022 Mazda CX-5.
However, as the years progressed, the role that the CX-5 plays for Mazda has changed significantly. As the CX-5’s competitors look to recreate their next iteration, the Japanese automaker has spent more quality time with the 2023 CX-50, an entry-level compact crossover. So, where does that leave the CX-5?
To make a long answer short, the Mazda CX-5 was and will always remain an impeccable compact crossover. Anyone in disbelief of the CX-5’s capabilities hasn’t spent time with the SUV’s driving dynamics, sophisticated interior, and opulent demeanor. The Mazda CX-5 is inviting, and the compact crossover leaves enthusiasts craving more time behind the wheel with its handling.
So with that said, the Mazda CX-5 walked so the CX-50 could sprint. For instance, compared to the CX-50, the CX-5 isn’t as commanding. Additionally, the CX-50 offers a wider stance, lower profile, and is more compelling with various colorway options. On the other hand, the CX-5 sits higher, making upright proportions less attractive to the naked eye.
In addition to the Mazda CX-5’s ride height, the compact crossover also lacks a hybrid option. However, the CX-50 will add a hybrid drivetrain to its auxiliary soon. Fortunately, CX-50 fans aren’t confined to one engine option. Instead, there are two gas engines to choose from, the first is a 2.5-liter inline-four which renders 187 horsepower, and the second is a turbocharged engine that forges 256 horsepower for the upper trim levels. Moreover, all-wheel drive is standard for all trims, which means the Mazda CX-5 delivers 26 mpg combined for the 2.5-liter engine and 26 mpg combined for the turbo engine.
Although the Mazda CX-5 appeals as cheaper than the CX-50, there’s no denying that the CX-5 is the best SUV choice in the compact SUV segment. However, it is also evident that the 2023 Mazda CX-50 offers ample interior space, a fresh design, and an upcoming hybrid variation is around the corner. So it doesn’t matter which Mazda compact crossover is chosen; it’s clear that enthusiasts will acquire nothing but the best.
