Mazda Wastes No Time in the Rear View Mirror with 2023 Lineup Alterations
There are only two traditional cars currently in existence for the Mazda lineup. Well, technically, two models and three body styles, the 2023 Mazda 3 hatchback, sedan, and the MX-5 Miata Roadster. These two models are the central part of why enthusiasts find themselves struggling to leave without a Mazda vehicle at dealerships. So it’s no secret that the Japanese automaker would like to keep the Mazda 3 and MX-5 as long as possible.
For the 2023 model year, Mazda made some distinct modifications for the compact Mazda 3. For instance, the Japanese automaker eliminated the 2022’s base powertrain for a refined variation of another. Regarding the Roadster, Mazda confirmed that the MX-5 would eventually inherit an electrified variation, but that’s leaning more towards ten years from now.Â
Additionally, Mazda has yet to debut a vehicle that replaces the discontinued icon, the 6, a midsize sedan, but who’s to say there is a replacement that’s a tough act to follow? However, here’s what to anticipate from Mazda for the 2023 model year.Â
2023 Mazda 3
To the untrained eye, the Mazda 3 did not attain any enhancements but never judge a book by its cover. For 2023, the Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback feature the naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four as the base engine for more power and efficiency. The refined engine produces 191 horsepower, which is a five-horsepower increase. Additionally, the midsize sedan’s improved cylinder deactivation technology boosts gas mileage. The EPA estimated rating for the Mazda 3 is 28/37 mpg city/highway and a combined total of 31 mpg. Furthermore, the sedan or hatchback offers two extra mpg in the city, highway driving, and an additional one mpg combined.Â
2023 Mazda MX-5 MiataÂ
30 years into the game, the Mazda Miata remains a thrill for anyone behind the wheel. It seems as though the MX-5 will live longer than the nay-sayers expected, with an electrification plan in the works. Currently, the Mazda Roadster exists on the bones of the fourth-generation model from 2016. Additionally, the MX-5 welcomed a boost in power back in 2019 for its naturally aspirated 2.0-liter 1-4 engine. Most recently, the Mazda Miata included Kinematic Posture Control for better handling for the 2022 model year. Although the MX-5 isn’t expected to receive any alterations, enthusiasts are hopeful for another round of modifications in the next few years before the electrification powertrain.
