Mazda to Offer MX-30 With Long-Awaited Rotary Engine
Mazda has been vying for a spot in the EV sphere. This comes at a time where many other automakers have been competing to have the best zero-emission vehicle. The Japanese automaker recently released its first electric vehicle, the Mazda MX-30, and the reception was relatively positive. Many saw the MX-30 as an aesthetic and engaging crossover SUV that would set the pace for Mazda. The MX-30 makes use of Mazda’s SkyActiv architecture and features a single electric motor capable of 143 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. Despite its capabilities, the one thing that has put many off of the MX-30 is its low battery range. Fortunately, Mazda has a promising solution for this, the rotary engine. In the Spring of 2022, Mazda will be implementing a rotary-powered plug-in hybrid model to its MX-30 lineup. We’ll dive in further, but this is a great sign for the Japanese automaker.Â
Rotary-Powered Plug-In MX-30 Hybrid On the Way?
Mazda has been aiming to break into the EV sphere for some time. The Japanese automaker recently rolled out its first electric vehicle, the Mazda MX-30. Although the electric crossover has been well received, the largest complaint for many consumers and reviewers was the subpar battery range (100 miles). Mazda’s reasoning for this was that it couldn’t add additional capacity without compromising the battery or interior space. The automaker has been working tirelessly to maneuver this glaring inconvenience and now it seems a solution has been reached. In the Spring of 2022, Mazda will be adding a rotary-powered plug-in hybrid version of the MX-30.Â
Mazda is calling its new hybrid MX-30 a strong hybrid. It will be delivered alongside a plug-in hybrid version (PHEV). These hybrid and PHEV models will act as range extenders. The MX-30 PHEV will utilize an electric motor with a 300-400cc rotary engine which will serve as a generator for the battery. The gasoline-powered rotary engine will not be connected to the wheels, but rather it will simply provide juice to the electric battery and motor. So far, Mazda has not said anything about how much more range the battery will get with the new rotary engine, but this is a good step for the automaker. It signals that EVs will remain a focus for Mazda. We’ll be looking out for more news, but we can’t wait to see what Mazda has in store for its EV sector. Â
