Mazda Set to Unveil a Miata Concept Soon

Mazda will unveil a new roadster-related concept at the Japanese Mobility Show (October 26 – November 5, 2023). The originators of Zoom-Zoom announced that the showcase will feature new and old models of the MX-5 Miata, with a “new concept car designed to symbolize the exhibit theme” also on display. The concept news comes shortly after unveiling the facelifted “ND3” MX-5 Miata.

Based on the teaser image, the new Mazda roadster-related concept incorporates a scissor-door coupe concept that the automaker showcased last year (2022). The rear lights of the new concept are almost identical to those of the earlier “Vision Study Model,” which Mazda revealed as part of its presentation on electrification plans for the future.

Many anticipate that the current ND Miata will continue with its production plans for a few more years, which is relatively long for a modern car. Let’s face it: we are discussing the well-adored Miata. The previous-generation NC was in production for a decade, and the ND has yet to reach that milestone. Mazda already indicated that the next generation of the iconic sports car will incorporate some level of electrification, and the vehicle will likely be a hybrid. By 2030, Mazda plans to have 25 percent of its offerings as full EVs, while the rest will have some form of electric element.

According to a European Mazda executive who spoke last year (2022), Mazda has no plans to discontinue the MX-5 Miata, even as the automotive industry shifts towards EVs. The Mazda exec stated that the sports car will “continue to exist forever.” Ultimately, the Mx-5’s lifespan is excellent news for fans of the fun-size sports car, as it is difficult to imagine a world without lightweight exhilaration.
