Mazda Reveals Plans for Electrification Expansion
The Mazda CX-90, the only electrified Mazda available in the United States, stands as a testament to the brand’s commitment to innovation. This mid-size vehicle features a plug-in-hybrid powertrain, setting it apart from its counterparts. However, the lineup is set to expand, with the Mazda CX-50 scheduled for hybridization. This exciting news came to light alongside the Japanese automaker’s latest first-quarter financial results (Q1, 2024), with plans to introduce a hybrid CX-50 in the latter half of this year (2024).
Despite the recent announcement, this revelation could be more novel. A few years back, Mazda’s vehicle dynamics engineer, Dave Coleman, affirmed plans for the CX-50 to adopt a gas-electric powertrain developed by Toyota. Subsequently, news on this front remained scant until last month, when inquiries to a Mazda spokesperson corroborated to other car bloggers revealed that the “CX-50 hybrid is coming soon,” with further particulars slated for disclosure in June (2024).
Earlier in the year (2024), Mazda rolled out the CX-50 PHEV in the Chinese market, featuring the powertrain from the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, comprising a gas-powered 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with up to two electric motors. This iteration could serve as a preview of the version destined for the U.S. market. Mazda’s financial report also alludes to plans for a next-generation CX-5, somewhat surprising given previous expectations of phasing out the model after its current lifecycle, especially with the emergence of the newer CX-50. However, Mazda is charting a different course, intending to develop its hybrid powertrain and offer it in the forthcoming CX-5 iteration.
Mazda plans to bolster its EV endeavors to establish what it terms “e-Mazda.” Per the financial report, this initiative will introduce a new EV model, 2027, built upon Mazda’s inaugural dedicated electric platform. Recently unveiled, the Mazda EZ-6—a rear-wheel-drive sedan tailored for the Chinese market—boasts an estimated range of 370 miles. While not earmarked for North American markets, the EZ-6 provides a glimpse into Mazda’s potential in crafting new EV offerings.
