Mazda may be considering an all-new rotary-powered sports car. As of late, the Japanese automaker has been enamored with electric and hybrid technology. Mazda recently revealed the all-new Mazda CX-70 and CX-90, both of which are expected to feature a hybrid powertrain. The automaker has also equipped its first electric vehicle, the MX-30, with a rotary engine to help increase its available battery range. In seeing the benefit of hybrid technology, many wonder whether Mazda will incorporate the technology into a sports car. A patent for an electric sedan was recently discovered, and Mazda also showed off a render of an EV sports car. While neither has been confirmed, they lend credibility to the automaker’s future EV plans.

Mazda Sees An Electric Future

Mazda has been preparing itself for an electric future. The Japanese automaker outlined a goal to reduce its global carbon emissions. By 2030, Mazda hopes to have 25 to 40 percent of its global sales come from EVs. Mazda also wants to make its manufacturing plants carbon-neutral by 2035. While this seems ambitious, the automaker plans to approach its goal by initiating three phases focusing on hybrid vehicles. From there, Mazda will then focus on all-electric vehicles.

Mazda released its first all-electric vehicle, the MX-30, almost two years ago. Sporty and nimble, the all-electric crossover SUV embodied all the qualities that make Mazda so alluring. The only problem with the MX-30 was that it only offered 100 miles of battery range. This was a glaring issue that put many off the SUV. Thankfully, Mazda incorporated a rotary engine into the MX-30 to give it additional power and range. This concept of using a rotary engine with an electric motor is the foundation of hybrid technology, and it is where Mazda is currently at in its EV future.

Two new vehicles expected to arrive from Mazda are the CX-70 and CX-90. Both SUVs are expected to feature a new inline-six engine. They will also likely have an electric motor option as a hybrid system. The CX-70 will fit between the CX-50 and CX-9, while the CX-90 will be a larger three-row SUV. As Mazda aims for new hybrids, many wonder if a new sports car will see the same treatment. A recently discovered patent and a render of an EV sports car hint that the technology is there. All that’s left is for Mazda to give the go-ahead.
