Mazda Makes Plans for a Hybrid CX-5?
Wow, the CX-5 has been a hit for Mazda! Given its popularity, it’s no surprise that the automaker will launch a third generation. We’re excited to see what’s in store for the next generation.Â
According to Mazda, the official launch date for the new CX-5, CX-50, and CX-90 SUVs has yet to be finalized. However, the Japanese automaker confirmed that the latest version of the CX-5 will be available in showrooms soon. The new Mazda CX-5 will favor the current model in terms of configuration, which includes a four-cylinder engine, front-wheel, and the option for all-wheel drive.Â
The upcoming Mazda CX-5 will have a hybrid powertrain, like the Toyota RAV4 or Corolla Cross. Toyota owns a five percent stake in Mazda, and the two automakers have teamed up on several cars over the years, such as a Mazda 3 hybrid that’s only available in the Japanese market. Interestingly, the Toyota Corolla Cross and the Mazda CX-50 came together at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Alabama.
The Japanese automaker plans to produce a variety of electric and hybrid vehicles by 2025. However, the automaker hasn’t specified which models will feature which powertrains—some rumors circulated about rotary-powered hybrids, which could be exciting. Moreover, Mazda filed patents for a sportscar using a rotary PHEV.
The new CX-30 from Mazda is a unique SUV that employs a different approach to power its wheels. Unlike traditional rotary-engined cars, this one uses an internal combustion engine to generate electricity that will recharge a 17.8 kWh battery. This battery gives the SUV an impressive electric-only range of up to 53 miles. While some may wonder if the rotary engine will ever return to the US market, Mazda’s North American CEO, Jeff Guyton, has stated that the company is currently prioritizing the launch of the CX-30 in Europe and Japan.
Mazda has exciting plans for the US market, as they will introduce two new SUV models soon. Currently, the CX-90 is North America’s most popular three-row SUV, and it’s easy to see why. However, later this year, Mazda will add the CX-70, a two-row version of the CX-90, to its lineup. With these two models and the already popular CX-5, Mazda will have a complete lineup of SUVs for the foreseeable future. It’s great to see Mazda expanding its offerings and giving enthusiasts more options.
