Mazda Files New Patent for Rear-Mounted Transaxle
Mazda recently filed yet another patent, this time for a rear-mounted transaxle. As of late, Mazda has been busy working on a way to improve its powertrain. The Japanese automaker has been aiming to create a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain for its electric vehicles like the MX-30. With such little battery range, Mazda has been intent on attaching a rotary engine to the electric SUV to improve its range. This is good news for Mazda’s EV endeavors, but with its gas vehicles, that’s where this new transaxle patent comes into play. Mazda has been working on improving the MX-5 Miata’s body roll. With this new patent, we may see some additional changes to the compact sports car that improve its stability. Mazda hasn’t said much about the patent, but we’ll take a look and explore the details.Â
Mazda’s New Transaxle Patent
Mazda has recently filed for another patent. This time, the Japanese automaker is aiming for a new rear-mounted transaxle. From the patent images shown, the design seems to be akin to an automatically shifted six-speed manual transmission, or a sequential gearbox. Though this seems odd, based on the design, a single-clutch manual is aided by a mechanism that automatically changes the gears. Sequential transmissions like the one shown are typically lightweight and inexpensive. They’re also known for shifting hard which is why they’re popular in race cars and motorcycles. For the average consumer, however, it may not be ideal.Â
One of Mazda’s concerns in improving the range of its MX-30 is that cabin space would be affected due to the engine placement. With this new patent design, it seems Mazda is aiming to save space by making more room for passengers. The transaxle design in the patent is somewhat unconventional, but using a compact design allows Mazda to save on space and expenses. We’re not sure what Mazda’s goal is here, but if it’s for a hybrid Miata, it may be the perfect combination.
Mazda has been eager to utilize a new powertrain, so this patent may be laying out the foundation for exactly that. Mazda is known for their compact sports cars so with a new transaxle mounted inside along with an electric motor, a PHEV setup could do wonders for Mazda. The limits are boundless and it’s up to Mazda to decide. The automaker can utilize the unique transaxle in an automatic, or with some modifications, a manual. We’ll have to wait for more information from Mazda, but we’ll be on the lookout for this design.
