Mazda Displays its Rich Racing History in Daytona
Mazda wants to remind you that its brand is more than just its popular CX series and sporty Miata lineup. The automaker has a rich racing history, which it is showcasing this weekend at Daytona by unveiling its Mazda Heritage Collection. This collection highlights Mazda’s illustrious racing past, which includes a Daytona connection beyond the famous Speedway that is hosting this weekend’s Historic Sportscar Racing event, culminating in the Saturday-Sunday Classic 24.
Mazda’s publicity team has stated that this weekend marks a new chapter in Mazda Motorsports’ history as the brand launches a campaign to celebrate the culture of Mazda Motorsports with fans, owners, and customers. This ongoing campaign will showcase Mazda’s rich racing heritage and aims to connect with its loyal community of motorsports enthusiasts.
To kick off the campaign, Mazda is showcasing two restored stars from its past, the 1989 767B, which won its class at Le Mans that year, and the ’91 RX7 GTO, which won both the IMSA GTO manufacturer and driver championships in 1991. Former Mazda prototype racers Jonathan Bomarito and Tom Long will be behind the wheel of these two legendary cars, competing in a pair of 30-minute races on Friday and Saturday at Daytona. This event serves as a perfect opportunity for Mazda to share its racing heritage with the world and connect with its passionate community of fans and customers.
In addition to maintaining Mazda’s new historic effort, Flis Performance is also responsible for producing all of the manufacturer’s race cars for IMSA’s Mazda MX-5 Cup series. The MX-5 Cup series is an important component of Mazda’s motorsports program and provides an opportunity for up-and-coming drivers to showcase their skills on a national stage. By partnering with Flis Performance, Mazda can ensure that its race cars are built to the highest standards and that its drivers have the best possible chance of success on the track.
