Mazda recently announced plans to make all of its factories carbon neutral by 2035. These plans align with the Japanese automaker’s goal of making its entire lineup carbon neutral by 2050. Mazda recently unveiled its first electric vehicle, the 2022 Mazda MX-30. Although the all-electric SUV initially received mixed criticism, mostly for its low-end battery range (100 miles), the Japanese automaker has been working on new plug-in hybrid technology (PHEV). This unique PHEV technology utilizes a rotary engine to increase the range offered by electric vehicles like the MX-30. It can also be applied to other vehicles like the all-new 2023 CX-60 to improve performance. We’ll take a look at Mazda’s roadmap and see how it plans to go carbon neutral by 2035.

Mazda Plans to Go Carbon Neutral by 2035

Mazda recently announced plans to make all of its factories carbon neutral by 2035. The Japanese automaker currently owns 10 manufacturing plants around the world. It is also developing a new plant in Huntsville, Alabama in conjunction with Toyota. Like many other automakers, Mazda has been aiming to reduce carbon emissions by producing electric and hybrid vehicles. Mazda’s new goal of making its factories carbon neutral will aid in this mission to reduce global emissions.

Mazda laid out three areas that it hopes to focus on when converting its manufacturing plants into carbon-neutral zones. These include energy conversation, shifting to renewable energies, and introducing carbon-neutral fuels for in-house transportation. Mazda has stated that it will pursue energy conservation by developing low-temperature paints and optimized processing technology. For its shift toward renewable energy, the Japanese automaker said,

Mazda is also considering various forms of decarbonization, such as low/carbon-free power generation in its plants and procurement of electricity from renewable energy suppliers.”

For its carbon-neutral goals, Mazda will research carbon-neutral biofuels to use for its in-house transportation. In addition to making its factories carbon-neutral, Mazda also hopes to produce more electric vehicles. The automaker has gotten its start with the MX-30, but the hope is to utilize its Skyactiv EV Scalable Architecture to produce more battery electric vehicles. We’ll be staying tuned for more news from the automaker, but it’s good to see Mazda laying the foundation for its carbon-neutral future.
