According to a recent patent application from Mazda, there may be an all-new all-electric sedan on the way. The Japanese automaker released its first all-electric vehicle, the Mazda MX-30, a year ago. Since then, Mazda has been working on improving the available battery range offered by its EV. The automaker has also been working on improving its hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. One such hybrid, the Mazda CX-60, has demonstrated the possibility of combining an engine with an electric motor. The result was a powerful hybrid SUV that was capable of delivering 322 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. While Mazda has kept its next EV under wraps, a recent patent has many speculating that the next EV to come from the Japanese automaker will be an electric sedan. We’ll take a look at the application and see what consumers can expect.

Is Mazda Working on An Electric Sedan?

A new patent application was recently published by Mazda. In the application, the body structure for what appears to be a new compact electric sedan was discovered. This has many speculating that the Japanese automaker’s next EV will be an electric sedan. It may even replace the Mazda 3. As of late, Mazda has been working on improving its hybrid technology. With new vehicles like the CX-60 and CX-90, Mazda is hoping to utilize the full capabilities of a combustion engine combined with an electric motor. With this new electric vehicle, it seems Mazda will focus solely on battery technology.

Looking at the patent application, we can see emphasis placed on the body structure of the vehicle. Along with the structure, we can also see details relating to the motor placement and battery size. According to the patent, the battery is large enough to provide adequate battery range. This is a huge improvement compared to the automaker’s MX-30 which managed a mere 100 miles of battery range. The patent shows that the battery is quite thin, however. It would also appear to be a typical lithium-ion battery pack.

Additional details found in the patent relate to the drive system. The patent shows a single motor at the front of the vehicle. This is not set in stone however as notes indicate that the motor could also be placed at the rear of the car as well as on both axles. This means the new electric sedan could utilize rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. It’s all up to Mazda to decide. The patent also describes seating for 4-5 people. Although the design of the vehicle shown resembles the Mazda 3, it could just be a placeholder for something new. Regardless, this is great news for Mazda. For now, we’ll be staying tuned for more information as we await the automaker’s next EV.
