Is Mazda in Need of a New Sports Car?

Red Mazda RX Vision Concept Sports Car

It’s fascinating to think about the possibility of a new rotary-powered sports car from Mazda. The RX-Vision concept car from 2015 certainly got fans and gearheads’ hearts racing, but with stricter emission laws, many believed we would never see a return of the rotary engine. That is until recently, when the Japanese automaker unveiled its latest hybrid crossover and surprised us all with a rotary engine paired with a hybrid powertrain. While a new hybrid crossover may not be the most exciting news for spouses with kids, it signifies a massive step forward for Mazda, as its iconic rotary engine is finally coming back after over a decade. This news has left many wondering if a new RX-9 is on the horizon. While there hasn’t been any official news yet, rumors circulated about an exclusive design of a 1989 Mazda RX-7 FC by digital artist Rositislav Prokop. The design showcases the ten ways the RX-9 may revolutionize the sports car industry.

Let’s Welcome the Rotary Engine Back to the Family

It’s no secret that the rotary engine had its ups and downs, ultimately leading to its discontinuation in 2012. Nonetheless, Mazda remains committed to bringing back this iconic engine in some way, shape, or form. The resurrection tour began with the new MX-30 R-EV, as the rotary engine acts solely as power for the battery and not directly to the wheels. However, recent patent leaks suggest that the new RX sports car may be powered by a hybrid powertrain coupled with an electrified tri-rotary system, allowing for more power output and significant weight reduction. While this may not be what everyone expected, the Mazda RX-9 is still shaping up to be a solid contender.

A Sports Car as Light as a Feather

Many fans of the RX lineup considered Mazda’s last rotary-powered car, the RX-8, to be a downgrade from the more popular RX-7. The consensus was that the sports car lacked power, was heavy, and had an unremarkable design. Although the Mazda RX-8 boasted impressive handling and responsiveness, its poor fuel economy and consistent maintenance requirements made fans skeptical of it as a worthy successor to the RX-7. The Japanese automaker took note of these criticisms and developed the Gram Strategy, which optimizes various elements of the car to reduce weight collectively. The Gram strategy was notably employed in the Mazda MX-5 ND and with the proposed engine layout of the RX-9, providing the automaker with even more room to utilize the Gram Strategy by incorporating lighter batteries and cables.

Next-Gen Infotainment

Mazda is well-known for producing some of the best car interiors in the industry. The new 2024 Mazda CX-90 has already surpassed some well-seasoned rivals believed to possess the most luxurious European car interiors. The Japanese automaker incorporates minimalist elements into its design, which gives the car a sleek and sophisticated look. Additionally, Mazda’s infotainment system is driver-oriented and intuitive to use. The infotainment screen rests high up on the dashboard so that the driver can keep their eyes on the road while still being able to control the car’s amenities. Furthermore, the sports car can be controlled by a knob near the gear lever, which may seem unconventional initially, but most Mazda owners find it easy to use and valuable in the long run.
