Introducing the 2025 Mazda CX-70: A Midsize Contender in Mazda’s SUV Lineup

Mazda boasts an extensive array of sport-utility vehicles, commencing with the compact and budget-friendly CX-30 and culminating in the CX-90, a three-row model. Notably absent from Mazda’s lineup was a spacious SUV tailored for five passengers. This void is set to be filled with the imminent arrival of the 2025 Mazda CX-70. Nearly identical in size to the CX-90, the CX-70 omits the third row to prioritize passenger comfort. Positioned as a midsize SUV, it is poised to compete with alternatives such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda Passport, Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, and the upcoming Toyota Crown Signia. With numerous options available in this segment, our comprehensive testing will determine where the CX-70 stands among its peers. Elegant exterior and a stylish interior resembling luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes make this a noteworthy addition to Mazda’s lineup.

Enthusiasts will appreciate the standard inclusion of a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine in the CX-70, delivering 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Higher trims are expected to feature a more potent version, likely boasting 340 hp and 369 lb-ft. Similar to the CX-90, this SUV utilizes a rear-wheel-drive-biased platform, enhancing its handling compared to rivals with more power directed to the front axle. For those prioritizing efficiency, a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid option is available, offering an estimated 26 miles of all-electric range.

Mazda has lavished attention on the CX-70’s interior, employing a blend of premium materials and a clean design. The result is a luxurious feel that outshines non-luxury competitors in its price range. Physical buttons control major functions, minimizing distractions for the driver. The introduction of a striking red Nappa leather option enhances the interior aesthetics, especially when paired with a dark-colored exterior.

However, the tech offerings present a mixed bag. The optional 12.3-inch display from the CX-90 is a notable improvement, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and built-in Amazon Alexa integration. Yet, touchscreen functionality is restricted to the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto environments, with native software controlled by a dial rear of the shifter and cupholders. Mazda could consider adopting touchscreen setups in line with industry trends.

Safety features in the CX-70 include Unresponsive Driver Support, capable of safely pulling the car over in a medical emergency. This joins the list of available safety technologies like adaptive cruise control, active lane-keeping assistance, and cross-traffic warning.

With its size and appealing aesthetics, the Mazda CX-70 emerges as a compelling choice in its segment. However, its success will likely hinge on its pricing strategy.
