Following years of anticipation, Mazda has finally introduced its new front-engine, rear-drive-based architecture and accompanying powertrains, which aim to boost the automaker’s reputation and place it in a market segment above mainstream. The new hardware will debut in the CX-90 three-row crossover, offering a dynamic and upscale driving experience. However, despite its impressive attributes, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 may still fall short of expectations.

According to reviews from experts, driving the CX-90 is an impressive experience. Technical director Frank Markus exclaimed “Zowie” when driving it hard, while Senior features editor Kristen Lee found it “surprisingly fun to drive quickly” and praised its chassis control and refinement. Features editor Scott Evans also raved about its handling, stating that it outperforms its competitors by a wide margin.

According to the reviews, the 3.3-liter turbocharged I-6 engine in the CX-90 is quite impressive. It is smooth, delivers power linearly, and sounds really cool. Mazda also developed an eight-speed automatic transmission, which has received mixed reviews.

The CX-90 is also available as a plug-in hybrid, which combines a 2.5-liter I-4 with an electric motor. The PHEV version of the CX-90 has an electric-only range of 26 miles and provides enough power for around-town use. However, some reviewers have noted that you can feel slight lurches from the transmission as it shifts in EV mode. In hybrid mode, the CX-90 PHEV provides similar speed and handling to the I-6 model, with minimal reductions.

The CX-90 is a beautiful SUV, but some reviewers have noted that its exterior design is more of an evolution than a revolution. However, the interior is a clear step upmarket and has received high praise from reviewers. The base interior is nice, while the top-end version stands out with its imaginative stitching and chrome trim. Mazda has also kept physical switches for basic functions, which reviewers appreciate.
