A Luxurious Experience Starring the 2024 Mazda CX-90
In the past few years, Mazda has been working hard to revamp their lineup of SUVs. While they still maintain their signature Kodo design language, Soul Red Crystal paint, and powerful engines, they have also made sure that each SUV has its own unique personality. We had the pleasure of test driving the CX-30 and the CX-50, which both exceeded our expectations. Now, we are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the CX-90, Mazda’s newest flagship SUV.
We recently had the pleasure of test driving the CX-90, and it truly sounded like the perfect car on paper. With more space and an enhanced engine lineup that boasted better fuel economy and more power, the CX-90 seemed like a dream come true. Mazda graciously offered to loan me a Premium Plus version of the new plug-in hybrid for a few days to use as my family car, and I happily accepted. My experience driving the CX-90 was both typical and atypical of what I’ve come to expect from Mazda vehicles.
I recently had a chance to check out the Premium Plus CX-90, and I have to say, it really looks and feels like a premium SUV that could easily justify its nearly $60,000 price tag. One thing that stood out to me about this vehicle was Mazda’s attempt at a plug-in hybrid powertrain. While I appreciated the effort, I’m not completely convinced that the PHEV is the best choice for everyone. In my experience, the powertrain can be tricky to work with, and for regular use as a three-row family car, you might not get the optimal efficiency to make the PHEV worth the investment.
That being said, I haven’t had a chance to drive the CX-90 with the new inline-six engine yet, but from what I’ve read, it seems to be an excellent option. It’s also impressively efficient by three-row family hauler standards, with a combined mpg rating of 25 and 28 mpg on the highway. If I were in the market for a new CX-90, I might opt for the gas model instead (or maybe even consider the Toyota Grand Highlander) so I wouldn’t have to deal with the hassle of plugging in.
As a Mazda fan, I really appreciate how the company focuses on creating a harmonious relationship between the car and driver with their Jinba Ittai philosophy. It’s all about achieving that oneness that comes naturally when you’re riding a horse – something that’s especially important when you’re behind the wheel. Simplicity and predictability are key components to achieving that feeling, and I totally agree that it’s much easier to achieve that with a combustion engine than with a plug-in hybrid. Overall, I think Mazda is doing an amazing job of creating cars that truly embody this philosophy and make driving a truly enjoyable experience.
