The all-new 2023 Mazda CX-50 is here. Mazda’s new compact SUV arrives with modern styling, a more distinct look, and improved technology and driver-assist features. With the CX-50, Mazda wanted to create a more refined version of the smaller Mazda CX-5. Both SUVs feature the latest in technology and driver-assist features, but the CX-50 comes equipped with more capability that can rival competitors like Subaru and Jeep. The 2023 CX-50 shares a powertrain with the CX-5, but it diverges into a category of its own. We’ll take a look at the all-new SUV and see what Mazda has in store for their latest SUV.

What’s New for the 2023 Mazda CX-50?

After months of teasing, Mazda has finally unveiled the all-new 2023 Mazda CX-50. The compact SUV arrives with new exterior styling, an improved engine, and better capability to take owners wherever they need to go. As part of the CX family, the CX-50 shares some qualities with its older cousin the CX-5. Both SUVs share a powertrain, but the CX-50 improves upon the CX-5 with stronger performance and more capability in terms of equipment. The 2023 CX-50 also starts at a relatively affordable price, $28,025 (plus destination fee).

Driving the Mazda 2023 CX-50

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 comes equipped with either a naturally aspirated 2.5L I4 or a 2.5L turbocharged engine. The I4 engine is capable of 187 horsepower while the turbocharged engine can achieve 256 horsepower. Mazda stated that it improved the CX-50’s engine cooling so it will see increased towing capacity. Owners using the turbocharged 2.5L will see that they get a towing capacity of 3500 pounds, 1000 pounds more than the CX-5.

Since the 2023 Mazda CX-50 shares a similar powertrain with the CX-5, the compact SUV does provide a familiar driving experience. The CX-50 utilizes a six-speed automatic transmission, but with the turbo engine equipped, the SUV sees impressive torque. As expected with any Mazda vehicle, the transmission shifts are smooth and it seems Mazda tuned the suspension to be a bit softer. This translates to a bit more body roll, but the extra width of the CX-50 and the lower driver seat help prevent this. The CX-50 also features new drive modes such as towing and off-road. This comes along with the normal and sport selections which alter the vehicle’s calibrations.

Inside the 2023 CX-50

When looking at a Mazda vehicle, it’s a given that the interior will invoke a luxurious and stylish response. Mazda’s KODO design is responsible for this feeling and with the CX-50, it is present once again. The 2023 Mazda CX-50 features a quiet and comfortable interior. Depending on the trim, owners will note an upscale brown or black leather with similar stitching. The infotainment system is similar to other Mazdas, but it features new touchscreen functionality.

In terms of space, the CX-50 seats four adults comfortably. Headroom is less than usual but the driver and passenger seats sink lower. The cargo floor is also three inches lower so overall there’s more cargo room. Mazda’s 2023 CX-50 looks to be a powerful contender. The Japanese automaker has hinted that off-road trims are in the works, but we’ll have to wait for more information. For now, this is a luxury SUV without the luxury price.
