Mazda has been updating its SUV lineup over the past few years, with the CX-30 replacing the CX-3, the CX-50 coming soon to replace the CX-5, and the CX-90 replacing the CX-9. However, Mazda does not currently offer a CX-7 model, though it is planning to add a new CX-70 to its American lineup. There is not much information available yet about the new Mazda CX-70, but we’ll keep an eye out for updates.

A Two Row Midsize SUV

The upcoming CX-70 is expected to be a two-row midsize SUV, slotting between the CX-50 and CX-90 in Mazda’s lineup. As per its numerical designation, the CX-70 is likely to be larger than the CX-50 and smaller than the CX-90. Mazda has already unveiled the CX-60 for other markets, and the CX-70 is expected to be a tweaked version specifically for the American market, potentially offering more space than its international counterpart.

A Hybrid Engine

According to reports, the CX-70 is expected to offer a hybrid powertrain. Car and Driver has speculated that the CX-70 may share similar powertrain options with the larger CX-90, which offers a 340 horsepower 3.3-liter inline-six and 323 hp 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid options. It remains to be seen if the CX-70 will have the same engine options or if Mazda will offer something different for the midsize SUV.

The Mazda CX-70’s Resemblance

Mazda is known for carrying over design elements from one vehicle to another, creating a cohesive look across its lineup. The CX-60, which has already been revealed in other markets, bears a striking resemblance to the larger CX-90. It is expected that the upcoming CX-70 will also feature similar design elements, creating a family resemblance across Mazda’s SUV lineup. The CX-70 is also expected to offer a luxurious interior, similar to the CX-90 and CX-60.

Initially, Mazda had targeted the end of 2023 as the launch date for the CX-70. However, according to Automotive News, Mazda North America CEO Tom Donnelly confirmed that the launch of the SUV will be delayed until 2024. This means that the CX-70 will likely be a 2025 model year vehicle. While the reason for the delay is unclear, it is possible that it is related to the ongoing global chip shortage, which has impacted production schedules for many automakers.

While Mazda has not officially announced the pricing for the CX-70, we can speculate based on the prices of the CX-50 and CX-90. The CX-50 starts at $30,300 and goes up to $43,300 for the Turbo Premium Plus model. On the other hand, the CX-90 starts at $39,595 and goes up to $59,950. Given that the CX-70 is expected to slot in between the two models, we can expect it to have a starting price of around $35,000, with higher trims potentially going up to $50,000 or more.
