The demand for 3-row midsize hybrid SUVs is on the rise, whether they’re conventional hybrids or plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). These SUVs can come with a hefty price tag, so the ability to save on gas can help offset the monthly car payment.

Choosing a new vehicle can be daunting, especially when considering which type of hybrid to purchase. Let’s compare the 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV and the 2024 Toyota Highlander Hybrid to shed some light on this decision.

Mazda is currently revamping its SUV lineup, and the flagship model, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV, has finally hit the market, replacing the CX-9. The CX-90 boasts an upgraded, more robust exterior design, which is becoming increasingly popular. Mazda is known for offering excellent value, and the non-hybrid version of the CX-90 does just that. However, the CX-90 PHEV aims to compete in the premium SUV market without the premium price tag, starting at $51,320, including destination charges.

Highlights of the 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV include:

  • Increased power: Generating a combined 323 horsepower, significantly more than its non-hybrid counterpart, which produces 280 hp from its 3.3-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine.
  • Plug-in capability: The CX-90 can travel 26 miles on battery power alone, sufficient for most daily errands or short trips.
  • Standard AWD: Unlike the Highlander Hybrid, all Mazda SUVs come standard with all-wheel drive (AWD).

Moving on to the 2024 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, it enjoys an advantage over many rivals by not looking like a typical hybrid vehicle. Apart from a small logo, it closely resembles its gas-powered counterpart. The Highlander Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, producing a total of 243 hp. While front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, it can be upgraded to AWD. Despite being less powerful, the Highlander Hybrid offers seating for up to 8 passengers in a spacious cabin, along with advanced technology and safety features. Pricing starts at $42,365, including destination fees.

Both the Mazda CX-90 PHEV and Toyota Highlander Hybrid share attractive exterior styling, roomy interiors, and a wide range of safety and convenience features.

Although the Toyota Highlander Hybrid holds the advantage in terms of price, starting at $9,000 cheaper than the Mazda CX-90, it lacks the same power output and plug-in capability as the Mazda.
